Medicare Annual Enrollment 2027 in Grosse Pointe: Your AEP Guide

Oct 7, 2026 | Blog

The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) is just around the corner, running from October 15 to December 7. If you are already enrolled in Medicare, this 54-day window is your primary opportunity to review, adjust, and optimize your healthcare coverage for 2027.

Any coverage changes you lock in during this period take effect on January 1, 2027. Because insurance companies update their costs, benefits, and provider networks every year, sticking with your current plan on autopilot could end up costing you more out of pocket than it should.

Here's what Medicare beneficiaries in Grosse Pointe and across Metro Detroit should know before the window opens.

What You Can Change During AEP

During the Annual Enrollment Period, you can:

  • Switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan, or the other way around
  • Move from one Medicare Advantage plan to another
  • Join, switch, or drop a Part D prescription drug plan
  • Return to Original Medicare and add a standalone Part D plan

If you have a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy, keep in mind that Medigap changes aren't tied to AEP. In Michigan, switching Medigap plans outside of certain protected situations can mean answering health questions, so it's worth talking through before you make a move.

Start With Your Annual Notice of Change

If you're in a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan, your plan should have mailed you an Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) by the end of September. This document spells out exactly what's changing for 2027: premiums, deductibles, copays, drug coverage, and which doctors and pharmacies are in network.

Many people set it aside without reading it. Don't. It's the single best preview of what next year will look like if you do nothing.

Five Things Metro Detroit Retirees Should Check This Year

1. Your doctors and hospitals

Networks shift every year. If you see specialists through Henry Ford Health, Corewell Health, DMC, or University of Michigan Health, confirm they'll still be in network for 2027. A cardiologist or oncologist dropping out of your plan's network can be a costly surprise.

2. Your prescriptions

Plans revise their drug lists (formularies) and pricing tiers annually. A medication that was affordable this year could move to a higher tier or require prior authorization next year. Check every drug you take, not just the expensive ones.

3. Your pharmacy

Preferred pharmacies can change too. If you fill prescriptions at a local pharmacy on Mack Avenue or Kercheval, make sure it's still preferred under your plan, or you may pay more at the counter.

4. Your travel plans

A lot of Grosse Pointe and St. Clair Shores retirees spend part of the winter in Florida or Arizona. Many Medicare Advantage HMO plans only cover routine care in your local service area. If you split the year between Michigan and somewhere warmer, your plan type matters more than you might think.

5. Your total costs, not just the premium

A plan with a low or no monthly premium isn't automatically the cheapest option. Add up premiums, deductibles, copays, and your plan's out-of-pocket maximum to see what a realistic year would cost based on how you actually use care.

Missed AEP? You May Have One More Chance

If you're enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period runs January 1 through March 31. During that window you can make one switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan or return to Original Medicare. It's a useful safety net, but it's more limited than AEP, so it's better not to count on it.
